Your Excellency,

The meeting which opens the 5th of July in Douchanbe, will be essential for the future economy and peace of this region.

But, how can we speak of future peace on the borders touching Afghanistan without taking into account the on-going martyrdom of the women in this country and the suffering of the entire population ?

We want to bring to your attention an important conference on Afghan women which took place in Doushanbe on June 27 th and 28th 2000. The conference was coordinated by NEGAR, an association created to support Afghan women, and "Women on the Road for Afghanistan". Attending the conference were 200 Afghan women made up of leaders or members of many refugee organizations in Tadjikistan, Europe ans the United States and Afghan women coming from Afghanistan, as well as tajik women association leaders and women from the five continents who are leaders in women's rights or members of associations which support this collective action.

Documents adopted by the conference, as attached, are on follows :

• A declaration of the Fundamental Rights of women in Afghanistan unanimously approved by the afghan women present.

• A call for action, drafted and signed by the members of the delegation present to endorse and support the Afghan women and their Declaration.

We hope, your Excellency, that you will give this matter your utmost consideration.
